The last will and testament of me Thomas Pottrell end elder late of Bilden End in the parish of Chrishall in the county of Essex and now of the parish of Littlebury in the same county yeoman made this twentieth day of March in the year of Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty three during the time of my health and strength of memory and understanding first I give and devise unto my son Henry Pottrell and his assigns for and during the term of his natural life all that my messuage or tenement and farm house with the houses outhouses dovehouses barns stables yards gardens orchards and all and every the lands meadows pastures and appurtenances thereto belonging or therewith now held and used situate lying and being in Chrishall aforesaid or elsewhere now in the occupation of my said son Henry Pottrell or his undertenants which said Messuage or tenement and farm house and part of the lands I purchased of and from Samuel Woodcock of my said son Henry Pottrell I give and devise the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances unto my grandson Richard Pottrell eldest son of my said son Henry and to his heirs for ever charged nevertheless and I do hereby charge all and every the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances so as aforesaid devised unto my said Grandson Richard Pottrell and his heirs with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain unto all and every the Brothers of him the said Richard Pottrell (the other sons of the said Henry by Elizabeth his now wife) that shall be living at the decease of the said Henry Pottrell their father and also with the payment of the sum of sixty pounds a piece of like money unto all and every the sisters of the said Richard (daughters of the said father and monther) which shall be then living to be paid to them respectively when and as they shall attain their respective age and ages or one and twenty years together with Interest for the same in the mean time from the end of one year next after the decease of my said son Henry their father at and after the rate of four pounds percent provided never the less that in case my said Grandson Richard shall happen to die in the life time of his said father Henry without lawful son which shall attain the age of one and twenty years then I give and decise the said messuage lands and tenements and hereidtaments with their appurts unto my Grandson John Pottrell (the youngest son of the said Henry by the said Elizabeth) and to his heirs for ever charged nevertheless and I do hereby in such case charge the same messuage lands and hereditaments with their appurtenances with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a peice of like money unto all and every the other sons of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife if any shall be living (when the said John shall become entitled thereto) and with the payment of the sum of sixy pounds a piece unto all and every the daughters of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife but if there shall happen to be no other son of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife living when the said messuage lands and tenements shall come to my said grandson John then I do hereby charge the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances in the hands and possession of my said Grandson John or his heirs with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a piece of like money unto all and every the daughters of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife (in her and instead of the aforesaid of the aforesaid sum of sixty pounds a piece) the said sums to be paid and payable to them respectively which shall then happen to be of the age of twenty one years at the end of twelve months next after the said John shall under the said contingency be in the possession thereof and to such of them as shall not then be of the age of one and twenty years when and as soon as they shall severally attain such age together with interest for the same as aforesaid from the end of twelve months next after such his possession thereof as aforesaid and in case the said Richard and John the sons of the said Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife shall both happen to die in the life time of the said Henry their father without lawful son having to attain the age of one and twenty years and there shall happen to be any other son of the said Henry Pottrell the father by the said Elizabeth his wife [Illegible] and them the said sons Richard and John so surviving them I give and devise the said Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances unto such son of the said Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife as shall survive him and his said two sons Richard and John and their [Illegible] and to the heirs and assigns of such son ever charged nevertheless and in like manner chargeable with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a piece unto all and every the daughters of the said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife then and at that time living to be paid and payable as aforesaid and in case all and every the sons of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife shall happen to die without lawful [Illegible] living to attain the age of twenty one years then I do hereby give and devise the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances unto my son Thomas Pottrell and his heirs for ever charged nevertheless and in like manner chargeable with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a piece unto all and every the daughter of the said Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife to be paid to them respectively within one year next after the ssaid Thomas my son or his heirs shall be in possession thereof under this my Will and I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto the sons and daughters of my said son Henry by the said Elizabeth his wife the several sums of money hereby charged or made payable to them respectively as aforesaid provided always that they and every of them shall be entitled to no more than one sum of one hundred pounds and not to different sums under the contingencies aforesaid as they shall happen and my Mind and Will is that if any default shall happen to be made in the payment of the said several sums of money hereby charged given or made payable to all or any or either of my said grandchildren from or out of the lands and tenements aforesaid or of the interest thereof til paid or payable contrary to the [Illegible] intent and meaning of this my Will then I do hereby authorise and empower all and every my said grandchildren when and as they shall respectively be entitled to receive the several sum and sums of money hereby given or made payable to them as aforesaid unto or upon the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances so charged therewith as aforesaid or any part or parts thereof in the name of the whole to enter and the same to hold and enjoy and the rents and profits thereof to receive and take until thereby or by the person or persons entitled to the possession thereof they my said Grandchildren shall be paid to several legacies or sums of money given or made payable to them respectively and every part thereof and all costs and charges to be occasioned by reason of the nonpayment thereof respectively and I do hereby in performance of a bond entered into by me unto my son John Pottrell upon his marriage with Lidia Martin Spinster for that purpose give and devise unto my said son John Pottrell and his heirs for ever all that tenement and orchard with the appurtenances called Christmass's or otherwise and all that close of pasture called Jarvis's or otherwise together with the lands late belonging and adjoining to two cottages or tenements in Bilden End aforesaid late in the occupation of Matthew Jeffery and Jane Loveday widow and now in the occupation of Thomas Abraham and [Blank space] Barlaman Widow now lying within and part of the said close called Jarvis's containing in the whole one acre more or less and one acre of land in Wellfield called Bankacre and also all those two acres and a half of land in the same field in three pieces and also all those two acred and a half of land in Waterslade heretofore the lands of Francis Abraham and also all those eight acres and a half lf land with the appurtenances formerly of William Pittys and also all those two acred of land now or late Woodland called Capps Bushes abutting upon Blackfield and also all those two half acres of arable land in a field called Flooden, heretofore the lands of Isaac Pottrell and Mary his wife and also all those three acres of land called Chiswick Croft hereunto the lands of John Lucas and mary his wife and also all that one acre and a half of land in Waterslade field, the lands of the Lord of the Manor on the south one head abutting on the Highway leading from Chrishall to Langley late the lands of Richard Nightingale and also all that one acre of land lying in Chiswick Croft aforesaid abutting on the Brook south and a ten acre piece of land north and also all those two acres of land lying in Wellfield one acre thereof abutting on a way from Chrishall to Chrishall common north west and the south side thereof next my own copyhold lands and the other acre thereof abutting on my close called Christmas's North West and next lands of Thomas Blackmore Esquire south east together with the Rights commons members and appurtenances of all and every the said premises, all which said lands and hereditaments are situate lying and being in Chrishall aforesaid(the copyhold parts thereof I have duly surrendered to the use of my will) also I give and devise unto my said son John Pottrell and his heirs for ever all that my close of pasture ground adjoining to the orchard belonging to the messuage called Thorns now in the occupation of John Kinsey containing by estimation half an acre and also all that my piglitle or piece of pasture ground containing by estimation half an acre abutting north west upon the road leading from Chrishall aforesaid to Chrishall common and next the land of John Lucas north east both which said last mentioned pieces of pasture ground are lying in Chrishall aforesaid and also all other my lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being in Wellfield Slade Field and Bulls [Illegible, looks like Dern] in Chrishall aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances. As to the rest and residue of my real estate (not hereby by me disposed) will descend and go to my eldest son the said Thomas Pottrell as my heir at law also I give and bequeath unto my grandson Thomas Rush and to my Granddaughter Ann the wife of Samuel Hopkins the sum of five and twenty pounds a piece of like money to be paid to them respectively within twelve months next after my decease also I give and bequeath unto my said son Henry Pottrell all my cloathes, linnen and wearing apparell. All the rest residue and remainder of my goods chattels monies securities for money and other my personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever after payment of my just debts legacies funeral expenses and the charges of proving this my will and all other jucident charges I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Pottrell and I do hereby nominate and appoint him my said son Thomas Pottrell sole executor of this my will and hereby revoking all former wills by me made I do declare this my last will and testament In witness whereon I the said Thomas Pottrell the testator have to this my last will and testament contained in these sheets of paper put my seal to the label by which they are affixed together and my hand and seal at the bottom of the two first sheets thereof and my hand and seal to the last sheet the day and year first above written Thomas Pottrell signed sealed publised and declared by the said testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us and by us in his presence and at his requst James Newland, Peter Sullens John Parker.

On the third day of July in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty nine administration (with the will annexed) of the goods chattels and credits of Thomas Pottrell the elder formerly of Bilden End in the parish of Chrishall in the county of Essex but late of the parish of Littlebury in the same county deceased was granted to Thomas Pottrell the son and one of the executors of the will of Thomas Pottrell deceased whilst living the son of the said deceased sole executor and residuary legacy named in the said will having been first sworn duly to administer the said Thomas Pottrell survived the said testator but died before he had taken upon him the execution of the said will.
